The Billiards & Snooker Association concludes their annual events for the year with the National Snooker Championships conducted for the U. W. Sumathipala Memorial Challenge Trophy at the Billiard Headquarters, Race Course today at 6.00 p.m.

The Snooker Nationals is sponsored by the Sumathi Group in memory of their late founder U. W. Sumathipala who was an ardent fan of the sport from the time of the Great M. J. M. Lafir era.

This year we have witnessed many upsets by the younger players where veteran players such as M. J. Mansoor, Henry Boteju, K. H. Sirisoma being ousted from the knockout stage. K. V. W. Jayasekera who returned to form along with Aslam qualified to the semifinals. The international star player Susantha Boteju and Zuresh Hasim of Otters Aquatic Club displayed brilliant form to beat their opponents and will play in the final for the coveted U. W. Sumathipala Trophy from 12.30 p.m. onwards at the Billiards Headquarters, Race Course, Reid Avenue. The final will be played for Best of Fifteen frames where the winners receive Rs. 25,000 and the runner-up Rs. 15,000 and cash with compliment of Sumathi Group.

Jagath Sumathipala, Managing Director of Sumathi Group has sponsored this National Snooker C'ships for the past four years. There is over 85,000 rupees in prize money and the Beautiful Sumathipala Memorial Challenge Trophy for the winner with the replica.

The President, Sarath J. de Alwis states that the final will be a well fought battle today and a large crowd is expected to attend the final.

Chandra Jayawardena, a former President of the Association will be the chief guest and Yoosoof Mukthar is the guest of honour. Awards will be presented for the National Billiards, Interclub A, B, C, D. E, Division tournaments and the Junior Championships.
