Main aim of police to prevent crime - DIG

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Pettah Vigilant Committee with the assistance of the Pettah Police granted 250 scholarships to underprivileged children in the Pettah Police area at a ceremony held at the Pettah Pradeepa Hall recently.

Two wheelchairs were donated to an infant and a young girl of the Pettah Police division. Rice and other food parcels were distributed among poor children in the area under the direction of Colombo DIG Bodhi Liyanage.

DIG Liyanage said that for the first time, the Pettah Police had organised this event of distributing food and other items for needy persons in the Pettah police area. The main aim of the Police should be to prevent crime with the assistance of the members of the vigilant committee and the public. The police also should protect the public who come to Colombo from distance areas, Liyanage said.

Over 3,000 CTB buses and 4,500 private buses come to Colombo daily. Police have a difficult task of controlling the traffic and protecting the public, the DIG said.

In an effort to ensure a peaceful and law-abiding society the Police have launched a special programme to educate school children, the future inheritors of the nation, on their civic duties and responsibilities, he said.

DIG Liyanage emphasised that as part of this programme security, environment, anti narcotics and traffic committees have been set up in schools in the Colombo Police Division to solicit the support of school children in combating crime and other anti-social practices.

The Colombo DIG who is spearheading this programme said the prime duty of the Police is to maintain law and order in the country.

As part of this duty the police have to investigate crime, arrest suspects and bring criminals before a court of law, combat crime and fraud and maintain patrols, protect life and property and control traffic.

"No organisation can achieve its noble objectives without the support and co-operation of the public. It is to facilitate co-operation that the Police have decided to educate school children, on their social duties and responsibilities," DIG Liyanage said.

Colombo Central Senior SP Lucky Dissanayake, ASPs Hemantha Adikari, Premalal Ranagala and members of the village committee participated in the ceremony. Chief Inspector Ananda Liyanapthirana OIC, Pettah police conducted the proceedings.
