Mangala condemns Lake House newspapers

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Chief Opposition Whip Mangala Samaraweera yesterday accused the Lake House newspapers particularly the Daily News and Sunday Observer of biased reporting of the current Iraqi war.

"At present these two newspapers have become more biased towards America than even the American media. These newspapers are trying to portray the American troops as liberators and Iraqi troops as terrorists," he told the PA weekly media briefing yesterday.

He said the PA vehemently condemned this biased reporting followed by the Lake House newspapers.

Samaraweera alleged that the Media Minister is powerless and has no control of the media. At present, the entire state media is handled by three persons headed by a foreigner hired from a bankrupt foreign company. " We would like to know about his designation and who paid his salaries," he said.

PA Media Spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama said in a situation where the oil prices in the World Market have come down, the Government had increased fuel prices by using the war in Iraq as a pretext.
