Fire-work factory owner killed in explosion

An owner of a fire-work factory in the Wattegama area, Kandy was killed on the spot when his plant exploded yesterday.

The explosion occurred around 5.45 a.m. while the owner was moulding gun powder using electric machine.

According to Police an alleged electricity leakage had led to this incident.

The fire-work plant had been located in the backyard of his house and due to the explosion a part of his house and several nearby houses were damaged. Machines and equipment at the fire-work plant too were damaged in the explosion.

Police said although there were several other persons inside the house, they were not injured. Wattegama Police is conducting further investigations.

Thirteen year old Dilrukshi Zoysa of Mabima, Heiyantuduwa, has to undergo surgery early for a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) in the heart, according to Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Y. K. M. Lahie. The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 300,000. Dilrukshi says she is unable to foot this bill and request donors to assist her cause by sending their contributions to Account No. 207-016913-0 at the People's Bank, Sinharamulla Branch, Kelaniya.

Presidential Secretariat peon booked in cheating case

A peon attached to the Presidential Secretariat, suspected of cheating, was directed to appear in court after four months by the Kandy Magistrate D.L.M. Seneviratne on Monday. The suspect was arrested on a complaint made to the CID by a senior assistant secretary of the Secretariat.

According to the CID the suspect is alleged to have collected over Rs. 500,000 from 16 men and women in Menikhinna area promising them overseas employment and Swarnabhoomi land and later defaulted. Sergeant M. Janananda of the CID filed a further report and said that CID had forwarded the inquiry proceedings to the Attorney General and was awaiting instructions to file plaint.

He also told court that court had ordered the suspect to report at the CID office in Colombo once a month and he had failed to report at the CID office on February 9.

The suspect informed court that he appeared at the CID office on February 9 and signed on a piece of paper as the suspects' attendance register was not available. The Magistrate directed the suspect to report at the CID office as ordered by court and he would be kept in remand until the case is decided if he fails to report.

He also put off the case for August 4.

Chitrasena, Vajira in India on invitation

Chitrasena and Vajira have been invited by the Government of India to visit India from March 26 to April 3, 2003 under the Distinguished Visitors Programme of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi, as a mark of appreciation for their invaluable service to promotion of traditional dance forms in Sri Lanka and their close association with India.

During their visit, they will travel to New Delhi, Bangalore and Trivandrum and meet important dignitaries, officials, artistes and cultural personalities, a press release said.

Edward and Sophie to become parents

News is out that Prince Edward's wife Sophie is expecting a baby. The 38-year-old Countess of Wessex suffered a traumatic ectopic pregnancy some 15 months ago.

Although the former PR girl has been receiving IVF treatment, the pregnancy is reported to be natural.

In December 2001 she was taken to a London Hospital for an emergency operation due to a ruptured fallopian tube and she lost five pints of blood.

The good news has been conveyed to the Queen and Prince Edward is said to be very pleased about the pregnancy which is still at eight weeks. Sophie does not think that she has delayed too long to have children and six months after the operation started on In Vitro Fertility treament at a London hospital.
