LCC meetings to be conducted regularly - Minister

by Ananda Kannangara

Labour Consultative Committee (LCC) meetings will be conducted regularly in the future with the participation of all trade unions irrespective of their party policies, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that the Labour Department, during the last year, conducted seven LCC meetings and sought the views of all 35 Trade Unions in the country which belonged to every political party before making amendments to the existing the Labour Acts.

"But the previous Government conducted only three meetings during the years of 2000 and 2001 and sought the views of only few TUs".

Samarasinghe is of the view that under this new program Parliament approval could be easily obtained to amend future Labour Acts since they are being discussed prior to forwarding them to the Cabinet.

Although Sri Lanka ratified ILO conventions No. 131 and 144 that mentioned of the conducting of LCC meetings with the participation of all Trade unions it is a pity that the previous Government did not respond to these ILO conventions and conducted only few meetings with the Trade Unions supported to them.

This resulted in them facing immense difficulties when seeking the approval from other trade Unions which were not invited for the LCC meetings.

Samarasinghe also said that the Department is now making arrangements to send a group of Trade Union representatives from all political parties to foreign countries to study the way LCC meeting are conducted in those countries.

"Arrangements have also been made to give computers worth Rs. 150,000 each to all recognised Trade Unions shortly", the Minister added.
