Water based transport system for Colombo and Western region

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday with regard to the development of a water transport system and recreational facilities, by making use of the water bodies and the ocean in the Colombo Metropolitan Region. The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Western Region Development, Urban Development Authority and Infoconsult of Canada.

Philip Ekanayake, President Infoconsult, Canada and Cecil Ekanayake Local Representative for Infoconsult Canada signed for the Canadian firm. S. Amarasekera, Secretary Ministry of Western Region Development and Chairman UDA and J.M.L. Jayasekara, Director General UDA signed on behalf of the UDA. Minister of Western Region Development M.H. Mohamed and Valerie Raymond signed as witnesses. Rahab J. Ariff, Private Secretary to the Minister and Mr. Vamadavan, Advisor to the Ministry was also present.

The Urban Development Authority and the Ministry of Western Region Development will work out proposals for using water bodies in the Western Region for transport and recreational facilities in consultation with other relevant agencies. Infoconsult, Canada has studied traffic and transport problems in the City of Colombo since 1999 and they have worked out environmentally friendly solutions involving the use of water bodies.

The MoU is for the development of a project to use water bodies for the transport, recreational and environmental conservation activities. Later under the co-ordination of the Western Region Development Ministry a joint venture company will be formed to implement the project.
