Suspect woman remanded till April 11

by Ranjith Padhmasiri

The Colombo Additional Magistrate yesterday ordered that the woman who was arrested by the Grandpass Police in connection with illegally detaining a 13 year old girl at the Orugodawatte housing scheme be remanded till April 11.

The judge also ordered the prison authorities to direct the suspect Nihanthi Siriwardana Liyanage to a psychiatrist and to obtain a report on her mental state.

The suspect woman denied the charge that she chained and kept the girl in starvation. The suspect said that she is suffering from a mental disorder.

Sergeant Gamini Keerthirathne who produced the woman before Court stated that the girl was unlawfully detained and inflicted with burns by the woman. When the villagers stormed the house, they found her chained to bed. A loaf of bread and can of water were kept near the bed.

He further said that the girl was directed to a doctor and that this incident led to civil commotion with damages caused to four police vehicles and injuries to two policemen.

The suspect woman said that she adopted the girl in 1991. She rejected the police accusation that they (Police) had recovered a cloth worn by a girl who had disappeared a year ago, from the suspect's house and that the police were trying to implicate her in this case.

Additional Magistrate Dissanayaka ordered the prison authorities to place the girl under the custody of the Department of Probation and Child Care and to obtain a medical report on the girl.

He further ordered the police to hold an inquiry and produce a report by April 11, 2003.
