Oscar winning film 'Chicago' here soon

Sri Lankan movie lovers will soon get an opportunity to experience one of the latest Oscar winning films.

The Ceylon Entertainment Ltd(CEL) has now made arrangements to import the film - Chicago - and screen it early May. This razzle-dazzle musical satire " Chicago " went on to win six Academy awards including the best picture at the recently concluded Academy Awards.

Based on Bob Fosse's broadway musical about two jazz murderesses using their jailhouse celebrity to further their singing career, Chicago also took the awards for Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones), art direction, film editing, costumes and sound.

After parlayed into a 1926 Broadway play based on the story of two real celebrity murderesses who lived in the 1920s, Chicago was turned into 1927 silent movie, a 1942 film starring Ginger Rogers, and a modern Broadway show, which debuted in 1975 and was revived in 1996. A very pregnant Zeta Jones won her Oscar for her portrayal of jazz singer and murderess Velma Kelly.

Organ recital to assist Colombo Centre for Special Education

The Chapel of the Transfiguration of S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia, will see one of its brightest stars return in the form of Jayadeva Ratnanayagam on Sunday the 30th of March at 7 pm, when he performs an organ recital in aid of the Colombo Centre for Special Education.

This is the first of ten such recitals in aid of charity Jayadeva has planned over the next few years, and the Centre for Special Education are the recipients of the first such recital.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration is virtually a second home for Ratnanayagam who spent a good deal of his school life honing his skills under the guidance of the inimitable Russel Bartholemuesz.

No doubt his mentor will be proud to have his prot,g, albeit for an evening.

Ratnanayagam will perform pieces from Craig Sellar Lang, Bach, Cesar Franck, Samuel Wesley and A.E. Floyd, to name but a few. Jayadeva Ratnanayagam read music at the University of Melbourne, after excelling in the Arts at his alma mater. Twice in his university he was awarded the Harold Charles Chatfield Medal for Excellence in organ performance. He graduated with first class honours two years ago and returned to Sri Lanka recently with an undergraduate Arts degree for good measure as well.

During his stay in Australia Jayadeva made his harmonic way upto Assistant Music Director of Music at St. Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. However, not willing to restrict his talents to one state he was also awarded the Herbert Davis prize for being placed first in the national organ competition. If his laurels and experience are anything to go by, patrons will no doubt be at the receiving end of a superlative evening of music.
