CASA awards ceremony

The Ceylon Association of Ships' Agents (CASA) will hold the awards ceremony to present certificates to the candidates who successfully completed the 9th CASA training course for Ship's Agency Personnel today at 4.30 p.m. at the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC), Crow Island, Mattakkuliya.

The chief guest will be A. R. Perera, Chairman of CASA and Managing Director of Aitken Spence Shipping Ltd.

The Association undertook to conduct training for personnel in the Shipping Agencies, who are members of the Association, as far back as 1995. This course gaining popularity year-on-year, has now become an annual event.

The Executive Committee, in recognising the importance of training of Shipping Agency personnel has an ongoing sub-committee for education and training from amongst its member agencies. Through this committee and the annual training course, CASA seeks to assist its member-firms to strive for quality and enhanced customer satisfaction throughout the different stages of interactions between their employees and customers, a spokesman said.

The training program is designed initially, to provide participants an all-round basic knowledge on shipping functions and methodology for junior executives in shipping agencies areas considered as important then were Port Operations, Container control, Customs Procedures, Documentation, Freight Markets, Sales and Chartering.

As the years went by, the program was improvised to include obligations of Agents to Principals, Trade Terms, Marine Pollution, Marine Insurance, Financial Management in Shipping and in today's context, IT Solution in Shipping Business.

CASA emphasises the need for expertise/professionalism in our industry, functioning in a fast changing environment and encompassing a wide range of business partners from both Government and private sectors ranging from the Shipping Ministry, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Sri Lanka Customs, Immigration and Emigration, Police, Central Freight Bureau of Sri Lanka, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Exchange Control Department to the various Chambers, Sri Lanka Shippers' Council, Freight Forwarders, Clearing and Forwarding Agents, Container Transporters and Depot Operators, Ship Suppliers which are in addition to a very large cross section of all important customers. The industry links all of these with foreign carriers/principals.

CASA therefore, select only highly specialised, experienced, competent and wholly committed resource persons to its panel of lecturers. It is thus a unique opportunity for those who participate, to learn of these wide ranging skills/practices in this exciting industry.

The course is organised by CASA and conducted by the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC), Crow Island, Mattakkuliya, a leading maritime training education college in Sri Lanka; CINEC offer their infrastructure at a low cost to minimise the cost to our member firms who sponsor their candidates.

This year certificates are awarded to 59 participants out of 69 registrants, some of whom unfortunately did not reach the required grade.

The next course, the 10th CASA training course for ships' agency personnel is being scheduled for September 2003.
