Maersk 'S Class' Asia-Europe service from Colombo in June World's largest shipping liner - Maersk Sea Land will launch a new weekly service from Colombo which has the capacity to transport 7,000 containers at a time. The service, scheduled to begin in June will deploy the largest container vessel 'S Class' and operate two services a week on its Asia-Europe service. This will be the first Maersk service to be operated under an exclusive agreement the company signed with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority recently, a Ports spokesman said. Maersk Sea Lanka West and Central Asia Chief Executive Jesper Kiaedegaard called on Minister of Port Development and Shipping Rauff Hakeem recently to finalise the discussions on this service. Referring to the new service Kiaedegaard has told the Minister that the company was prompted by the Colombo's strategic location as a shipping hub and that the new service would benefit both institutions alike. According to the Maersk agreement with the SLPA, Maersk will handle 125,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) including 40,000 TEUs from Colombo. |
