Navy arrest Tiger boat off Trinco by Ranil Wijayapala Naval troops patrolling the outer harbour of Trincomalee, arrested three Sea Tigers after a mid sea chase of their boat in the early hours of yesterday, a Navy spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. According to Navy three persons on the suspected boat had dumped some boxes into the sea when the Naval troops detected and chased them. The Sea Tigers have revealed that they have dumped ten boxes of 82 mm mortar bombs to the sea when Naval troops were chasing them. The three Sea Tigers and the boat arrested by the Naval troops were later handed over to the Trincomalee harbour Police for further investigations. The incident had taken place in the Chapel islands area one kilometre in the outer harbour of Trincomalee. The Deputy Chief of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News that the Navy informed the SLMM of this incident and they are closely following the situation. "The three LTTE cadres arrested by the Navy along with some GPS units and communication equipment were to be produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate around 7 pm yesterday and the LTTE Local Committee member was ready to get them released from the Magistrate", Haukland added. "The Navy is accusing the LTTE of carrying arms when they detected the boat. But we cannot confirm it as we were not there at the scene", Haukland added. |
