News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | WPC private member's motion withdrawn by Uditha Kumarasinghe A private member's motion moved by the PA council member Keerthi Udawatte at yesterday's Western Provincial Council(WPC) meeting thanking President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for repealing the liquor licenses given to MPs and the implementing of Capital Punishment had to be withdrawn as there was no quorum. After the debate on the motion, the JVP and the NLF asked for a division. As a result, the WPC Deputy Chairman Sumith Zoysa called a vote. Twenty council members including those in the PA and the UNP voted in favour of the motion while seven JVP members and the NLF member voted against. The Western Province Industries and Social Services Minister Mahesh Almeida, Western Province Health and Council Affairs Minister Nandana Mendis, S. A. Premaratne (PA) and Siripala Gintotakapuge (DWC) abstained from voting. The Deputy Chairman said when the vote was called there were only 32 council members in the chamber and according to council law, there should be a minimum of 35 to pass a motion". |
