This is a period where all political parties should work according to a common agenda to achieve durable peace and also to march forward with other developing countries to solve the problems faced by the people," said Mass Communication Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar addressing the students and teachers of Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya after handing over a speaker set for announcing and sports materials held at the main hall of Kalutara Vidyalaya. The Minister recollecting his school days at Ananda Vidyalaya said that all students lived as brothers and there was always a good atmosphere. He said he was the leader of the school debating team and was also a member of the hockey team. He stressed that the granting of freedom of the country from the British was delayed as Sri Lanka was communal-minded but late D. S. Senanayake, united the country for all to live as Sri Lankans and won Independence for the country. "Although Sri Lanka re-gained independence about fifty years ago, there was a ethnic war for nearly twenty-years. As a result the development of the country was retarded. Colossal amounts were spent on the war in addition to the heavy toll on life. At present there is a temporary peace in the country and this should be converted to a permanent one where all communities can live in harmony ," he said. He pointed out that once Singapore and Korea were very backward countries in South East Asia but today they are very strong with a sound economy. Unity is the key to development. Roshan Silva, the prefect of the college proposed the vote of thanks. |
