Plans to implement micro level projects in Vanni region

Plans are under way to implement several micro-level income-generating projects in the Vanni Region under the Revolving Credit Scheme. The Ministry of Vanni Rehabilitation will launch this program this year in the Districts of Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Puttalam and Anuradhapura at a cost of nearly Rs. 11 Million, states a press release from the Ministry Assisting Vanni Rehabilitation.

In addition, the Ministry has allocated a sum of around Rs. 50 Million for the improvement of basic amenities to facilitate the resettlement program on a sound footing. Basic amenities such as clearing of jungles and sites, repairs to roads, schools and state-owned buildings like MPCSs and temporary shelter facilities.

According to Ministry's Secretary R. Tharmakulasingam, inland fishermen at Pavatkulam in the Vavuniya District will be afforded with micro finances to continue their traditional Fishing in improved facilities. It is implemented by the Ministry at a cost of Two Million Rupees in association with the Regional Aquatic Culture Extension Office based in Vavuniya and Fishermen's Co-operative Societies in the area. The special feature of this program is that all three communities in the areas are to be benefited, targeting national integration goal.

A meeting under the Chairmanship of Minister of Vanni Rehabilitation Noordeen Mashoor with officials from the Ministry, Fisheries Department and representatives from the Fishermen's Co-operatives Societies will take place shortly to discus implementation modalities of the program.

Meanwhile, several income generating projects in the District of Mannar at a cost of Three Million Rupees, Mullaitivu District at a cost of Two Million Rupees, Puttalam District at a cost of Two Million Rupees and Anuradhapura District at a cost of Two Million Rupees are earmarked to be implemented during this year.

R. Tharmakulasingam noted that the main objective of these projects is to upgrade the income of the resettled families and to reduce the dependency on relief assistance provided by the state in order to make the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) self-reliant.
