Ranabima Rajakeeya Vidyalaya celebrates 7th anniversary

by Sigiriya group correspondent - H.A.W. Hewawasam

The rush for popular schools in the Kandy area especially in the Kandy Town has been a problem for many parents. Except those who were successful at the Standard 5 examination others had to struggle a lot spending money, time and energy to get a place in a good school for their children.

When the situation was such the Chief Minister of the Central Provincial Council D. M. P. B. Dissanayake intervened to help those parents who had been greatly affected by this problem. To provide some relief even for a small number Dissanayake took steps to start a new school. Ranabima Rajakeeya Vidyalaya came into being in this way on March 2, 1996.

The Principal and the staff with the support of the School Development Society (SDS) organised a celebration to mark its 7th anniversary, commencing from March 2 with a series of religious ceremonies. On the 2nd evening there had been a special Hindu programme followed by an over night pirith ceremony. The following day a Sanghika Dhana was offered to the Maha Sangha.

The school which started with 60 students now has 1928 with 78 teachers. Teachers who wanted to join the staff of this school have to face an interview.

However, the Principal says the staff was very cooperative and dedicated to their work. Otherwise he says the success they have achieved would not have been possible. There are Tamil and Muslim students who work in mutual friendship. Further they have the freedom of observing their own religion.

Admission is done by an examination conducted by the Provincial Educational Authorities. Wijeratne Weerasooriya, the Principal says they have had no problems in respect of school admission as the public knows well that the school observes the rule of law and has explicitly laid its conditions on admissions. Academic performances remain at a higher level. School records show that the total number of students who sat G.C.E. (O/L) was 168 and all passed the Exam qualifying for G.C.E. Advanced Level studies. Their performances in the field of sports, athletics, music, dancing, scouting and cadeting are very satisfactory and are at par with the other leading schools.

The SDS plays an active role and they are the guardians of the college. They are interested in the school but make no personal request or get involved in the internal affairs of the school, says the Principal. Further Ranabima Rajakeeya Vidyalaya has a special advisory body consisting of eminent scholars, educationalists, heads of government departments to guide the college in the proper direction. As a result of these strategies the school maintains a very high standard in education and has proved to be a college with strict discipline.
