Rising crime rate due to poor enforcement of laws - Prof. Peiris

by Ja-Ela group correspondent

Laws not properly enforced is the major problem in our society today and this condition facilitated the increase in the crime rate. So in order to face this situation, the Government is proposing to enact new laws said prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotions. He was speaking at the occasion of installing a Police post at the Ekala Industrial Estate Complex in Ja-Ela, last week. He said that improvements would be brought into the existing laws to close the loopholes to prevent an upsurge in the crime rate.

Prof. Peiris said that the Prime Minister has taken steps to release the necessary funds for the Police Department so that they can provide a better service. The Government would be purchasing 400 jeeps for the use of the Police under Indian Aid and Interior Minister John Amaratunga has granted 50 scholarships for Police officers for training in Italy.

Prof. Peiris said that the Ekala Industrial Estate was the oldest industrial complex and these factories while bringing in foreign exchange, also provided jobs for our people. Minister of Interior and Christian Affairs John Amaratunga said that laws in the country were not adhered to properly. Therefore, the Government proposed to bring in several new laws, but the JVP in excitement have protested against these proposed laws. He said that conviction for drug trafficking is the death penalty. But when the convict was incarcerated for 10 years, he would come back after that and start the same job of drug trafficking. Those who go against the new laws and the introduction of the death penalty were those who were in the habit of committing crimes.

Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugee Affairs Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene also spoke.

IGP Anandarajah said that this Police post would be run by the Ja-Ela Police. He said that this was to be opened earlier but due to various problems, it was postponed. He said that this Police post will provide protection for the factory owners and workers.
