PA appeals to media to be fair

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The People's Alliance on Friday appealed to all media personnel to observe the proper norms governing media coverage and to provide fair and objective reporting and not "cook up" things to satisfy various political elements.

"Our position is that we are for the freedom of speech. We have made our commitment towards the free media," PA Media Spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama told the PA weekly media briefing.

He said: "We also urge the Media to preserve democracy. Because we need a two party system. If the media is to go on trying to sabotage other parties, there will be a lot of repercussions. Finally, it will be the readership that will decide on the validity of these things."

He said after March 10 PA rally, there is a deliberate attempt on the part of the Government to stifle the press. "If this approach is taken then we will also have to discuss among ourselves what steps we have to take in self defence," Amunugama said.

MP Mangala Samaraweera said when the PA was in power, when the UNP held the Janabala Meheuma-1 some years ago, they did not put pressure on certain media institutions not to telecast it.

The first Janabala Meheuma was given a live coverage by a certain private channel. This is the sort of double standards of the media, he said.
