Walawe left bank project nearing completion The Walawe left bank development irrigation and settlement project which benefits five thousand farmer families is nearing completion. About twelve thousand acres of land will be brought under paddy and subsidiary food crops with the provision of water. The entire extent of land which will be brought under various cultivations will be 5,152 hectares. The number of families settled would be 8,994. A new town, eleven villages, five cooperative retail outlets, thirteen schools and eleven health centres will be set up within the developed area. There are also plans to raise the production of plantains by nineteen thousand metric tons.Over 24,700 employment avenues will be opened for which government will utilise Rupees 850 million and the Japanese government will release on sum of Rupees, 9,393 million. President project director Walawe H. G. Warnakulasooriya said that it was the Uda Walawe area where the maximum quantity of plantains are produced when taken into consideration in the whole island. The production percentage is seventy per cent, the RPM said. |
