A-G to advise CID on two major cases

by Sarath Malalasekera

Attorney General K. C. Kamalasabeyson, PC, said he would soon advise the DIG Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the steps that should be taken in connection with two major investigations.

The two major cases are, the alleged massive fraud at the Sri Lanka Rubber Manufacturing and Export Corporation and the complaint made by Agriculture and Samurdhi Minister S.B. Dissanayake against a Bribery Commissioner and two officials of the Bribery Commissioner's Department.

Earlier the CID probing the alleged fraud at the Sri Lanka Rubber Manufacturing and Export Corporation had forwarded the dossier of the investigations to the Attorney General for his advice.

In connection with these investigations the CID questioned several senior Government officials on a directive by the Attorney General, in connection with issuing vouchers running into millions of rupees to unauthorised persons.

The CID investigation revealed that Rs.30 million had been given to "Thuru Saviya' organisation in several vouchers. But the CID is unable to trace any person who received money through vouchers as the names in those vouchers were fictitious.

Earlier the CID said they will consult the Attorney General to obtain his advice on what steps should be taken in connection with the statement made by former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) earlier produced three suspects before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Priyantha Fernando. Later they were granted bail.

Investigations revealed that Rs.900.34 million had been released by the Treasury to the Rubber Manufacturing and Export Corporation during the last regime.

In the other investigation Minister Dissanayake alleged that a Bribery Commissioner met President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga with details of an investigation into Samurdhi funds, along with two officials of the same department. Minister Dissanayake alleged that the Commissioner had violated secrecy clauses of the Commission.
