Sebastianites have the edge over Cambrians

The biggest social event of Moratuwa the 53rd Battle of the Golds between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian's College will be played on March 7 and 8 at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa and the 18th Limited Over match will be played at the same venue on the following day (March 9).

Out of the 52 Big Matches played so far Cambrians have won six and Sebastianites two. This year Cambrians have not fared well in the Lemonade Trophy and a few matches were washed out by rain.

This year the Cambrians will be led by Shanaka Perumpuli, a third year coloursman who is a forceful batsman and the stumper of the side.

So far he has scored over 500 runs and claimed 40 victims. He was a member of the Sri Lankan under 17 team in 2000 and 2001.

His deputy is Kavinda Silva, a fourth year coloursman.

He is a right arm fast bowler and a useful batsman. He too was a member of the under 15 team which toured Malaysia and England. The cynosure of all eyes will be last year's skipper and fifth year coloursman, Bata Schoolboy Cricketer and Sri Lanka under 19 captain Sahan Wijeratne.

So far he has scored over 750 runs and he led the Sri Lanka schools team to victory with an unbeaten century against the visiting England Academy team.

Sahan will go all out to break the series record aggregate of 423 runs held by former Sebastianite skipper Kingsley Fernando who played from 1955 to 1960. So far Sahan has scored 398 runs in four matches with an average of 99.25.

Amila Sandaruwan a hard hitting bastman and a second year coloursman who toured England with the under-15 team will open the batting with skipper Perumpuli.

So far he has passed the six hundred run mark. Nisal Malinga a second year coloursman and a left arm leg spinner has captured 50 wickets. He took four wickets in four balls including a hat-trick against Royal College.

The middle order batting will be strengthened by second year coloursmen Srimal Peiris and freshers Nalin Prabodha, Nilanga Rohan, Dilshan Sampath, Thulanidu Tirimanne and Lalanka Abeygunawardene, Asantha Chetana who is a fresher can bat in any position.

St. Sebastians College, Moratuwa runners-up of the Lemonade Trophy Tournament will go all out for victory against their arch rivals Prince of Wales in this year's big match.

Their last victory was in 1966 under Sarath Perera and they are all out to break the thirty six year hoodo. They have a well balanced side and out of the sixteen matches they have won three outright including Nalanda College and gained first innings lead in twelve matches and lost to St. Thomas on first innings.

They have a well balanced side and led by fourth year coloursman and fine allrounder Manjula Silva.

He is an experienced player who turns out for Sebastianites Sports Club in the BCCSL Tournament. So far he has scored over five hundred runs and taken 65 wickets. His best bowling figures is 6 for 23 against Nalanda College.

Nuwan Perera another all-rounder with 850 runs under his belt including two centuries and 70 wickets will be the Vice Captain. Warnaka Mendis another third year coloursman and a allrounder will open the bowling attack with the skipper.

Second year coloursman Niresh Silva with a sound technique strengthens the middle order batting line up. Dunil Abeydeera, second year coloursman and left arm bowler and Sri Lanka under-17 poolist has captured 60 wickets.

he is also a good fielder in any position. A second year player and the baby of the side Dilhan Cooray opens the batting with Neomal Fernando who is also the stumper of the side, Deleepa Perera and Lahiru Fernando are both second year players and are assets to the side. Taraka Peiris is a fresher and find of the season.

Lahiru Anthony, Suhada Cooray, Geeth Silva, and Pathum de Mel are freshers.
