Krishantha overall champion in Air Force cycle tour

H. L. Krishantha of the German Sri Lanka Friendship Society won the overall championship at the Sri Lanka Air Force open cycling tour which was held in two stages on March 1 and 2.

The race was organised by Air Force SC, Sirasa Media Unit, Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited in collaboration with the Mounatin Biking Association of Sri Lanka and sponsored by Clogard.

Krishantha returned a timing of eight hours, 53 minutes and 52 seconds to collect a total of 37 points. C. N. Melvis of Sri Lanka Air Force SC was the runner up with a timing of eight hours 54 minutes and 56 seconds. S. Silva also from Air Force came third with a timing of eight hours, 57 minutes and 53 seconds.

The first stage of the race was held from Colombo to Dambulla via Kandy covering a distance of 150 kilo metres and the second stage was held from Dambulla to Colombo via Negombo covering a distance of 149 kilo metres. The winner of each stage received a cash award of Rs. 7500, second Rs. 4000 and third Rs.3000. In addition the fourth, fifth and sixth placed competitors received a cash award of Rs. 1000 each.

The overall winner of this race was presented the Air Force SC challenge trophy and a cash award of Rs. 50,000. The runner up received a cash award of Rs. 45,000 and third place Rs. 40,000. The fourth and fifth place received Rs. 20,000 each and competitors placed in the 6th place up to 10th place received Rs. 1000 each.

The first cyclist to reach Kadugannawa was Sisira Gatamuratta and he received Rs. 5000 through the courtesy of Lanka Mount Castle. The first cyclist to reach Katugastota was Jagath Kumara of German Friendship Society and he received Rs. 5000 from the Katugastota Lake House Agent.

In the second stage the first cyclist to reach the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala was Rohan Chaminda of Sama SC Battaramulla and he received Rs. 5000 from the Kurunegala Lake House Agent. The first cyclist to reach Katunayake too was Rohan Chaminda and he received Rs. 5000 from Sri Lanka Air Force. In addition the youngest and the oldest competitor also received special cash awards from the sponsors.

Air Force SC won the team championship followed by Army SC and Sama SC Battaramulla.
