by Sarath Malalasekera

The Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mohammed Macke yesterday further remanded the two suspects in the forged credit card fraud till March 12.

Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested two leading Colombo businessmen in connection with the racket.

Later both suspects were produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and remanded pending the completion of the identification parade.

One suspect is alleged to have purchased goods to the value of Rs.250,000 from a leading shop in Colombo. He had told the CID that all the goods which he purchased from the shop had been sent to Jaffna.

The other suspect, is alleged to have cheated a state bank for over Rs.650,000. The suspect earlier obtained anticipatory bail from court. Later on an application by the Attorney General, State Counsel Gihan Kulatunga assisted by CID Officer Nimal Kulatunga obtained a warrant for the arrest of the suspect.

The CID said that the suspect wanted by them surrendered to the CID through his lawyers. He was questioned and later produced before the Magistrate.

CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke has deployed a special team to trace the other suspects who are allegedly involved in the racket.
