UNICEF scheme to promote English

Addalaichenai group corr.

With the objective of promoting English language teaching methodology, UNICEF has undertaken a project to train the English Teachers in the Kalmunai District.

Under the scheme 270 English Teachers serving in Akkaraipattu, Sammanthurai and Kalmunai Zones were selected for the Training Programme which has been designed for 30 days covering 120 hours.

The ceremonial inauguration of the training course for the first batch of teachers numbering to 90 from Akkaraipattu Zone, was held at Addalaichenai Central College under the chairmanship of Zonal Director of Education (Akkaraipattu) U. L. M. Hashim. UNICEF's Head of Field Division (Batticaloa/Ampara District). Ms. Antiniya James and her team who were also present at the inauguration ceremony outlined the programmes, objectives and expectations. Speaking at the ceremony Ms. James stressed the importance of English and how best this programme would be successfully implemented. She also said she is having a very good scheme to impart English knowledge adequately to English Teachers and expected their participation and co-operation.

The Implementing Agency GAFSO's (Group Action for Social Order) Consultant I. A. Jabbar who is mainly instrumental to implement the scheme also spoke. Asst.

Directors of English Unit of various Zones and the Teachers in English were also present. Earlier the UNICEF's Head of Field Division Mrs. Antiniya James and the team and the Zonal Director of Education and his team were accorded a reception by the students of Addalaichenai Central College.
