by Tharika Goonathilake Sri Lanka Tourism Board will launch a survey to gauge the potential of the Indian Tourists market shortly as part of a larger initiative to woo more tourists from neighbouring India. The survey, will take into account the views of 1000 departing Indian tourists at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) which the Tourism Board expects will form a vital information base, for "tourism market references and consumer oriented promotional activities". The survey, will look at tourists, motivation, travel behaviour patterns, opinions and impressions as well as tourist expenditure in terms of the Indian traveller, Sri Lanka Tourism Board Research and International Affairs Director Malraj Kiriella told the `Daily News' yesterday. The appraisal, will be conducted by a team of interviewees competent in Indian languages using the stratify sampling method to maintain high representation, he said. India, Sri Lanka's top tourists provider in 2002 with 69,960 tourists is seen as a key destination for Sri Lanka by the travel and tourism industry, given the vast potential for tourism promotion between the two countries. The commencement of the proposed Colombo Tuiticorin ferry service and Sri Lankan Airlines flights to Cochin in April by the national carrier are envisaged to further boost efforts to reach the 100,000 indian arrival target for 2003. |
