by Florence Wickramage The Department of Wildlife Conservation will this month re-open for the public two important National Parks which had been closed for nearly two decades. The Yala East National Park will be re-opened on March 9, and the Wilpattu National Park will re-open on March 16, DWLC Director General H.M.B.C.Herath told the Daily News yesterday. The Yala East National Park which was closed May 5, 1985 lies 12 km. south of Arugam Bay on the South-East coast in the Eastern Province. It is accessible from the Wellawaya-Pottuvil road. This National Park was established on January 2, 1970 covering an extent of 18,149 ha. Known also as Kumana it is reputed for its avifauna. The Wilpattu National Park lying on the North West Coast 13 kms. west of Anuradhapura spans the border between North Western Province and the North Central Province. This National Park was established on February 25, 1938 having being created a Sanctuary in 1905. |
