SriLankan to launch eighth Indian destination SriLankan Airlines will start flying to Kochi (Formerly Cochin), its eighth Indian destination from April 22, the airline said yesterday. Kochi, the commercial capital of the Kerala state in South India will also be the airline's fifth destination in South India. At present SriLankan flies to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bodh Gaya, Chennai, Bangalore, Trichy and Trivandrum. An airline spokesman said it will initially launch twice a week flights every Tuesday and Thursday and a third flight every Friday beginning May 1. Head of Commercial, G.T.Jayaseelan said: "In 2002, India was our fastest growing market with the highest number of tourists into the country. As a close neighbour, we are delighted to be expanding operations to India and look forward to serving the people of Kochi." "We are confident that as Sri Lanka has proved a popular holiday destination to many Indians therefore the people of Kochi will love travelling to Sri Lanka, he said adding that 'SriLankan is committed to bringing tourists from other destinations to Kochi.' Kochi like many other South Asian cities was under the Portugese, Dutch and British rule. It has many tourist attractions. Its major exports include tea cashew kernel, rubber, spices, coir products, betel, coffee and seafood. |
