Colombo Port transshipment volumes up 22% in February 2003 The port of Colombo handled 102,321 TEUs of transshipment containers in February 2003 registering a growth of 22.1% compared to February 2002. The total container throughput handled in February was 146,737 TEUs, a growth of 17.2% as against the total throughput handled during February 2002. The transshipment growth of 22% achieved during February 2003 is the highest growth level achieved by a transshipment Port in the region. The surge in volumes at the Port of Colombo is attributed to the productivity enhancement measures combined with the aggressive marketing approach adopted by the Jaye Container terminals and South Asia Gateway Terminals providing world class container terminal facilities. The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in their letter dated February 3, 2003 addressed to the Minister of Ports Development and Shipping Rauff Hakeem states that "we see a remarkable Improvement in productivity and discipline at the Port which is a positive sign and we also note with appreciation that the Port worked on many holidays without interruption which was not possible during the last 15 years. The incentive payment to expedite the vessel operations were removed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, which is laudable". In a bid to boost its image as the pre-eminent load centre (hub) of South Asia on the advice of Minister Hakeem, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Parakrama Dissanayake has been spearheading a program to boost service delivery to clients. |
