by Ranil Wijayapala

A hand grenade had been thrown at the residence of Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front's (EPRLF) Batticaloa leader in the general area of Galavetikanda in Batticaloa town by two unidentified persons on Monday around 10.30 p.m, defence sources said yesterday.

However, the grenade has fallen close to the walls of the residence and exploded causing no damage.

It has been further revealed that those two unidentified persons had come on a motorbicycle without a number plate.

Batticaloa Police are conducting investigations.

The former EPRLF member of the Jaffna Municipal Council T. Subathiran issuing a press statement blamed the LTTE for the assassination attempt on Poratheivu Pradeshiya Sabha chairman and EPRLF National organiser R. Thurairatnam.

The statement issued by Subathiran said a hand grenade was lobbed by the LTTE in to the residence of EPRLF national organiser R. Thurairatnam in an attempt to assassinate him. This incident took place around 10.30 on Monday it added.

"We would like to remind the world that few weeks ago vice chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha and a leading member of the EPRLF, Mr. Alagathurai was abducted and assassinated by the LTTE. We appeal to all the political parties, democratic organisations and the international community to prevail upon the LTTE and ensure the democratic rights of all parties and to function without intimidation," it said.
