Naotunne - 'Grand Slam' champ by Winston Rajudeen A high standard of carrom with 7 slams were recorded at the Grand Slam Tourney. Thumula Naotunne of Sri Lanka. Telecom SC turned all predictions topsy turvy with a stunning performance to become the Grand Slam Champion (men's) at the Grand Slam Carrom Tournament held recently at the CFSL Headquarters, Reid Avenue. Seed No. 4, Naotunne defeated national champ Viraj Fernando in the men's singles. Final scores 24/25, 25/10, 25/18 in a thrilling encounter. After the first two sets were equalised one each, Fernando led 18/4 at one stage during the 3rd set. However cool and composed Naotunne fought back and sliced his way through to finish the 3rd set 25/18 in his favour, much to the surprise of the carrom fans around. Thumula very much in touch after having won the national men's doubles last month achieved another milestone to record a career best performance in recent times. Another slicer who impressed very much was young schoolboy Chamil Cooray from St. Johns' College, Nugegoda who entered semi-finals, but unfortunately lost to the national champ Viraj in well contested three set match losing 23/25. Evergreen veteran P. D. N. Fidelis took 5th place. Amitha Wickremasinghe won all seven matches spearheading the women's list, followed by her sister Nayana Wickremasinghe finishing second with 6 wins, Kalyani Amarasinghe and Leela de Silva 4 wins each. |
