Protest in Jaffna over Manipay by Ranil Wijayapala Hundreds of civilians in Jaffna yesterday joined the protest campaign organised by the LTTE backed International Students Association of Tamil Eelam against the Manipay incident. The LTTE backed student union has organised this protest campaign after some women LTTE cadres and civilians were injured in an assault by soldiers at the Manipay checkpoint, sources from Jaffna said. The protestors demanded the withdrawal of Security Forces from Jaffna holding placards. The crowd that started the protest at the Jaffna library premises at 11 am later proceeded to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission office in Jaffna and handed over a letter to the SLMM office. On their way to the SLMM office they burnt an effigy of Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Sarath Fonseka at the Naga Vihara junction. They have requested SLMM officers to take action not to repeat incidents of this nature. SLMM officers have reportedly told the protestors the issue was settled as Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Sarath Fonseka assured that such incidents will not be repeated in the future. Jaffna LTTE political wing leader Ilamparuthi also assured that LTTE women cadres will be instructed not to enter cleared areas wearing military type belts. The Manipay incident started on Wednesday when some women LTTE cadres wearing military type belts were denied admission to cleared areas by soldiers, who had attempted to remove the military type belts from the women cadres. |
