Royal face tough task against Joes

by Chris Dhambarage

Royal with three victories under their belt will be hoping to maintain their impressive record when they take on St. Joseph's in a key Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament match at Dearly Road starting today.

However on paper both teams look equally good and the game should turn out to be a battle for a first innings win. Batting has been the strong point for both Royal and St. Joseph's this year who will be playing their t annual encounter in the series which began in 1898.

The Josephians have dominated the series with 26 wins to their credit and Royal have emerged victorious on 20 occasions. But none of the teams have been able to produce a result for the past six years with the previous win recorded in 1997 by St. Joseph's College. The last win for Royal was registered way back in 1993.

This time Royal are brimming with confidence with three outright victories which have also made them one of the strong contenders for the 'A' Division League title. St. Joseph's seem to have recovered well from their shock defeat against St. Benedict's and this was quite clear considering last week's performance. St. Peter's College will be hoping for an improved batting performance when they confront Nalanda in their encounter at Bambalapitiya commencing at today.

The Peterites suffered a major setback a couple of days ago losing to D. S. Senanayake on the first innings on their home grounds in a low scoring encounter. In contrast the Nalandians have proved themselves as a tough outfit and are fresh after a magnificent batting display against Royal last week. They hammered over three hundred runs on the first innings and will be out to produce a similar effort even though the Peterites possess a much stronger bowling attack.

S. Thomas' College will have the edge when they confront Prince of Wales College in their annual encounter at Moratuwa starting today. The Thomians are shaping up well and are just beginning to display their true potential with an encouraging performance against St. Benedict's last week. The Cambrian were forced to follow on their previous outing against St. Peter's College, but are capable of performing better on their home grounds.
