One hour token strike

The employees of the peoplised bus companies will stage a one hour token strike on January 31 to protest against the sale of six cluster companies to the British IBIS Transport Consortium.

At a press conference at the Opposition Leaders Office yesterday, the President of the CTB Trade Unions Joint Front Somaweera Chandrasiri said the token strike is organised" to put pressure on the Government to stop this corrupt transaction which would put the country's bus service in greater crisis."

"We will have to resort to tougher trade union action next month if the Government fails to heed to our demands," Chandrasiri said.

The token strike has been organised by the Alliance for the Protection of National Assets and Public Rights which consists of opposition parties and opposition and independent Trade Unions.

The organisers plan to get the private bus owners support for the token strike.

The President said "The IBIS consortium is yet to furnish the Rs.80 million down payment which was to be closed in October last year. The deadline was postponed on several occasions under the pretext of documentation delays whereas the real reason had been that they were unable to acquire the necessary funds," he said. (MF)
