It is timely that "we look at other sources of energy, specially, renewable resources such as municipal garbage," said Western Region Development Minister M. H. Mohamed. Speaking at a workshop on the 'optimum use of Sri Lanka's renewable energy resources' as chief guest, he said the workshop will be useful in the present context. The workshop organised by Thorne International U.K. and Ceylon Business Associates Ltd. was held at the Hotel Ceylon Continental on January 20. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, British High Commissioner, Mayor of Kotte MC and several officials from public and private sector organisations were also present. The main focus of the presentation was how best to make use of municipal garbage, a renewable energy source to generate much needed electrical power in Sri Lanka. Officials from British High Commission, Board of Investment, Ceylon Electricity Board, National Engineering Research Centre, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, Urban Development Authority, Central Environmental Authority, Mahaweli Authority, UNDP, State and private banks, Kotte and Dehiwela Mt. Lavinia Municipal Councils, Moratuwa Urban Council, Sri Lanka Industrial Technology Institute, Small Scale Energy Producers Association, Planters Association and Sevanagala Sugar factory participated. S. Amarasekara, Secretary, Ministry of Western Region Development also addressed the gathering. |
