Inaugural session of National Law Conference to be held today

The inaugural session of the National Law Conference 2003 will be held today at the Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will felicitate nineteen members of who have completed fifty years service at the Bar with a dinner today at the Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo.

Justice Sarath N. Silva, PC will deliver the keynote address.

The nineteen members are K. T. P. de Silva, R. A. Selvaratnam, Karunajeewa Jayasekera, N. Denzil Fernando, D. P. B. Mahadiulwewa, S. Augustin Silva, S. M. A. Farooq, E. M. M. Wijerama, J. R. M. Perera, A. L. M. Hashim, PC, R. R. W. Rajapaksa, J. A. R. Weerasinghe, B. M. Amarasekera, A. L. S. Dedigama, H. D. V. Tillekeratne, G. E. Perera, K. Viknarajah, G. D. C. Weerasinghe and A. T. R. Gooneratne.

On January 25, Banking (Plenary), Chairman - President's Counsel Romesh de Silva and Dr. Wickrama Weerasooriya will speak on "Law Reforms in Financial-Banking Sector to meet global challenges."

Intellectual Property Law (Plenary), Chairman Supreme Court Judge, Justice C. V. Wigneswaran. Speakers are - Additional Solicitor General Saleem Marsoof, PC will speak on "Trips and its impact on Sri Lanka and President's Counsel K. Kanag-Isvaran who will speak on "E-Commerce and the Law".

International Trade Law and Admiralty Law- Chairman Additional Solicitor General Saleem Marsoof, PC. Dr. Rohan Perera, PC, Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs will speak on "Multilateral Investment Agreements and its impact on Globalisation. "Admiralty Jurisdiction and arrest of ships" will be the theme of the lecture given by Deputy Solicitor General P. A. Ratnayake.

Criminal Law (Victims of Crime)- Chairman S. S. Wijeratne, a member Constitutional Council. The Speakers are- Deputy Solicitor General Palitha Fernando on "State responsibility for Victims of Crime and Upali Gooneratne on Victims of Crimes in the Globalized context.

Industrial Law and Labour- Chairman, President BASL Ajantha Atukorala. Gotabhaya Dassanayake, Secretary General, Employers Federation of Sri Lanka, will speak on Award of Compensation by Labour Tribunals and the Commissioner of Labour, Suresh Chandra will address on "Recent Trends in Types of Employment.

Insurance - Chairman - President's Counsel Nihal Jayamanne. The Speakers are - Chandra Schafter, Managing Director, Janasakthi Insurance on "Insurance for the Protection of Professionals." Dr. Dayantha Jayasuriya, chairman- Sri Lanka Insurance Board, Director General, Securities and Exchange Ciommission will addres on "The new Regulatory Framework relating to Insurance in Sri Lanka".

Compnay Law- Chairman- President's Counsel J. A. P. Deraniyagala. The Speakers are - Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Chartered Accountant, management consultant on "Coporate Governance." Dr. Harsha Cabral on "Company's Act in the Context of Globalization".

Crimial Law (Recent Developments in Criminal Law- Chairman, Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Raja Fernando. The Speakers are - Dr. Ranjith Fernando on 'How relevant is the amending Act. No 22 of 1995 to the Penal Code in the present day context. High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama on "Recent Developments in Criminal Law."

Arbitration - ARD, Chairman - President's Counsel Shibly Aziz. The speakers are Attorney General K. C. Kamalsabeyson PC, on International Commercial Arbitration and the Sri Lankan Approach and President's Counsel S.A. Parathalingam on "Is the Arbitration Act No. 11 of 1995 a Step in the Right Direction."

The sessions will close on January 26.
