CPC supplies enough for a month By Shirajiv Sirimane Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Daham Wimalasena yesterday confirmed that the Corporation's supplies were sufficient for another month even in the event of war breaking out in Iraq. "Supplies arrive in Colombo almost on a weekly basis and there is no cause for panic," he told the Daily News yesterday. "However, a price increase in Petroleum and Petroleum products were inevitable in the event of war breaking out in Iraq," he said. Commenting on the present price structure, he said that the Corporation had not adjusted the price mechanism for their three premium products, petrol, diesel and kerosene for the last three months in accordance with the monthly price adjustment scheme. Asked what his message to consumers, he called upon them to have adequate suppliers. J. C. Jayasekera who owns a mini cab company said that the CPC should always have adequate stocks in anticipation of an event such as the Iraq crisis which was in the air for almost three months. "This shows that the CPC is not prepared," he said. When contacted an official of the Private Bus Operators Association said that they are closely following the development of fuel prices. "If the prices keep rising we will have no other alternative other than to request for a bus fare hike." A carrier women I. Weeetasinghe of Panadura said that almost all the items in the market have gone up and if the bus fares too go up it will be almost impossible to exist form the salary. "Unfortunately when everything in the market has gone up salaries remain the same," |
