Open Windsurfing Championship : Priyantha reigns supreme The Open Windsurfing Championship organised by Lanka Sportreizen and the Windsurfing Association with the co-operation of the Bentota/Beruwela Hoteliers Association on the invitation of Chairman Sri Lanka Tourist Board was held on Sunday at the Bentota Beach. The Championships consisted of three course races. There were seventeen Competitors taking to the winds and the race got off to a fine start. Although the force of the wind was a little low for the first two course races there was a very good blowing for the Third Course Race. Upul Priyantha de Silva won all three races and was adjudged the overall winner. He was awarded the LSR Challenge Trophy and the Baron De Livera Challenge Trophy for the best Sri Lankan windsurfer. The first runner-up was Priyantha Gunawardena who was awarded the Bentota Beruwela Hotelliers Association Trophy, the second runner-up was Lalin Lalendra de Silva who was awarded the LSR Trophy. The youngest and the most enterprising Windsurfer was Essanka Peiris who was awarded the Thusitha Nanayakkara Challenge Trophy awarded by the organizers in memory of the eminent journalist late Thusitha Nanayakkara of "Kreeda" of Associated Newspapers (Lake House). The judges at the Championships were Thilak Weerasinghe and Thusal Gunawardene who are the only VDWS (Germany) qualified Judges in Sri Lanka. The Championships was conducted under Professional Board Sailing Association (PBA) Rules. The large number of officials and competitors were treated to a sumptuous lunch and entertainment by the Bentota/Beruwela Hoteliers Association. |
