Kandy SC out to retain Rugby Sevens Title

The star studded Kandy Sports Club will go all out to retain the Lt. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa Memorial Trophy for the second successive year by winning the Inter-club seven-a-side Rugby Tournament which will be worked off at Longden Place today and tomorrow.

Thirty four teams will vie for honours at this year's tournament with the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals scheduled to be worked off from 4 p.m. onwards tomorrow.

However Kandy SC will face a strong challenge from last year's runners- up Havelocks, Army, CR and FC and CH and FC.

The lads from Kandy will be led by Sajith Mallikarachchi and will have the services of outstanding 'Sevens' players Radhika Hettiarachchi, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Nalaka Weerakkody, Nilfer Ibrahim and Chamara Vithanage.

However Kandy SC are bound to feel the absence of that brilliant winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe who is still on the injured list.

Eight times winners of the Sevens Title Havelocks will be led by Ruwan Suranga and will have players of the calibre of Lalindra Rodrigo, Leonard de Zilwa, Lakala Perera and Jiffrey Saheed. Army Sports Club under the guidance of Sri Lanka Sevens coach Asanga Seneviratne too will field a formidable outfit which includes Sri Lnaka Sevens players Vajira Jayatilleke, Sithara Fernando, Kapila Knowlton, Nishantha Jayasuriya and Naufer Rahim.

CR and FC led by Shamly Nawaz will have the services of Asanga Rodrigo, Savantha de Saram, Tuan Bohoran, Kishan Musafer and M.J. Mushtaq. CH and FC will also field a strong team with players of the calibre of Nalin Dissanayake, Milinda Jayasinghe, Saranga Jayakody, Yuganthara Karunaratne and Ajith Upawansa in their ranks.

The 34 teams have been divided into eight groups.

GROUP 'A' - Kandy SC 'A,' Navy (Trinco), Army 'B', Anuradhapura RFU.

GROUP 'B' - CH and FC 'A', Havelocks 'B', Petersons 'A', Army (Diyatalawa), Colombo University.

GROUP 'C' - CR and FC 'A', Air Force 'B', Uva, Galle Development Squad.

GROUP 'D' - Navy 'A', Police 'B'. Kelani Valley, Old Thomians (Gurutalawa).

GROUP 'E' - Army 'A', Air Force 'A', Kandy B, Tristar.

GROUP 'F' - Police 'A', CR and FC 'B', Petersons 'B', Eheliyagoda RFU, Old Badulla.

GROUP 'G' - Ruhunu Development, CH and FC 'B', Kurunegala RFU, Balangoda RFU.

GROUP 'H' - Havelocks 'A', Navy 'B', Jawatte Lions, Matale RFU.

The chief guest for the final will be Mrs. Lali Kobbekaduwa, wife of the late Lt. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa, the former Sri Lanka scrum half, ex-secretary of SLRFU and leading 'A' Division referee who rendered yeoman service to promote the game. (R.S.)
