BCCSL decides on 10 percent and awaits players response

by Sa'adi Thawfeeq

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) interim committee met at an emergency meeting on Thursday and decided to pay 10 percent of the cash they will receive from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to the Sri Lanka cricketers.

The meeting took place after the Sri Lanka Cricketers' Association (SLCA) turned down the terms offered by the BCCSL to the players, thus creating a situation where the Cricket Board now finds itself on a collision course with the international governing body for the sport the ICC who want the signed Players Terms by Friday (yesterday).

The BCCSL had offered five percent of the total cash they will receive from the ICC for participating in the World Cup in South Africa next month, which was not acceptable to the players. The players are demanding a 20 percent share of the cash and according to Cricket Board sources they have also stated that this may be the final World Cup for a good number of them.

The five percent included a double match fee from 700 dollars to 1400 dollars, a 100,000-dollar bonus if they win the the World Cup, an additional 20,000 dollars if the team reached the final, and 145,000 dollars to offset whatever losses they may incur on advertising during the World Cup.

Cricket Board sources said the views of every member of the BCCSL interim committee's executive committee was sort before deciding to come up with a 10 percent payment to the players which has yet to be accepted by the SLCA. He said the incentives to win the World Cup will remain but the 10 percent increase will replace the amount they had earlier decided to pay to offset the players advertising losses. BCCSL interim committee chairman Hemaka Amarasuriya was expected to speak by telephone link from Colombo to Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya after the one-day international against England at Adelaide yesterday to come to a final settlement over the issue.
