by Sabaragamuwa special correspondent The only Ayurveda Medical Centre in Sri Lanka for treating domestic elephants Eth Suwa Sewana was inaugurated at Polambegoda, Aranayake recently. This centre was developed by E. Wijesinghe, Chairman of the Aranayake Pradeshiya Sabha under the guidance of Jayatilake Podinilame, Minister of Wayamba Region Development and with assistance from the Ministry of Tourism of Sabaragamuwa PC. Aranayake area was declared a tourist zone by the Government recently. Eth Suwa Sevena will be open for local and foreign tourists from March 2003. This is an important step taken to promote the area as a place of tourist attraction. This Eth Suwa Sevana centre is situated in about two and a half acres at Miganapalawa by the bank of Maha Oya. The chief physician of Eth Suwa Sevana is Dr. W. Miganapalawa who hails from "Miganapalawa"ancestry of aurveda physicians who treated elephants during the time of ancient Sinhala Kings. He treated a sick elephant free at his own expenses a few days ago. Dr. Miganapalawa treated the elephant suffering from an abscess in one of its legs. He operated on it using traditional methods and then applied medicine after removing the pus. The elephant is recovering. There are about ten elephants undergoing treatment at this centre. |
