The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the report about an attempt to assassinate President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in the 'Lakmina' weekend Sinhala newspaper has collected all information on the 'Editor' of the newspaper who published the news item. Tecla Dirukshi Perera, wife of Sripathy Sooriyaarachchi last week appeared before the CID and said she was the publisher of the Lakmina newspaper until December 12. On a request made by her to husband Sooriyaarachchi, Ranjith Silva was appointed publisher of the Lakmina newspaper after December 12, 2002, she told CID. Silva also made a statement to the CID earlier. CID investigations also revealed that the first Editor of the newspaper had been a journalist attached to a national newspaper. Investigators will also notice the former Editor of the Lakmina to appear before the CID to record a statement. The CID commenced investigations into the report on a directive by Interior and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga. A statement from Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was also recorded. |
