A scheduled meeting between President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Japanese special envoy Yasushi Akashi failed to materialise on Thursday after the President's Office abruptly cancelled the appointment citing a busy schedule for the Head of State. Akashi who is to play a key role in the International aid pledging conference in Tokyo targeting Sri Lanka's peace process is here on a five day official visit during which he was to call on the President, the Prime Minister and key Ministers of the Cabinet according to the itinerary drawn up by the Foreign Ministry. Contacted by the Daily News Presidential Media Director, Janadasa Peiris attributed the cancellation to a mix up made by the officers of the President's House responsible for handling her diary. "These officers have fixed the appointment without the knowledge of the President. Later it transpired that the President had a busy schedule when the appointment was made". |
