News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Attempt on SLMC national organiser foiled by Puttalam correspondent The members of an armed gang arrested at Iranawila, told the police that they were on their way to assassinate SLMC National Organiser K.A. Baiz on his way back to Puttalam after attending the Party delegates' Conference held in Colombo or to target him at his Colombo residence, said a police spokesman attached to the Chilaw Police Station. According to investigations, the assassination contract has been planned in order to take revenge regarding the ownership transfer of a trading stall in the Puttlam Weekly Fair, during the time Baiz was the Chairman of the Puttalam Urban Council. Out of the 11 arrested, nine are from Puttalam and two are residents of Jaffna. The suspects were produced before the Chilaw District Judge and Magistrate M.K.H.Abeyratne on January 12 and were remanded till January 14. Crimes Branch of the Chilaw Police under H.Q.I.Ananda Alwis are continuing investigations. |
