by Indeewara Thilakarathne Prof Sunil Ariyaratne, Former Acting Head of the Faculty of Arts, University of Sri Jayawardhanapura filed a Rights Plea challenging the university authorities for his removal from being the Head of the Faculty of Arts. Ariyaratne has cited University Vice-Chancellor Dr D.S Epitawatte, Prof Tissa Kariyawasam, Dr Chandima Wijebandara (Dean Faculty of Arts) and 12 others all of SPJ as respondents. Among other matters the petitioner states that the then VC Prof. Jagath Wickremasinghe had appointed him as the acting Head of the Faculty of Sinhala and Mass Communication on May 5, 2001. Later the petitioner's service was extended. Subsequently Ariyaratne was appointed Head of the Department on July 13, 2001. Meanwhile an application was also filed in the Court of Appeal by Rathna Wijetunga against the refusal to appoint him to the said post and the Court of Appeal had issued interim relief. The petitioner has continued to serve in his position till January 1,2003. Until the VC appointed Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam as the Head of the said Department with effect from January 1, 2003. Ariyaratne also urged to quash the decision to remove him from the said post and to grant cost. |
