by Rajmi Manatunga The Private Bus Owners Association (PBOA) yesterday called upon the Government to dissolve the National Transport Commission and other provincial transport authorities. Chairman of the Association Gemunu Wijeratne told a press conference that an Independent Transport Regulatory Commission should be established to solve the problems faced by the authorities and commuters as a result of the service being controlled by two different institutions. Certain bus companies and bus terminals are regulated by the NTC while other buses including inter-provincial services are controlled by the provincial authorities now. This has caused problems and encouraged corruption and irresponsible action. The situation will worsen with private bus companies being formed under the new Parliamentary Act by March," he said. Wijeratne said that the best solution for the crisis in the transport sector was to take the service under the central government and regulate it without any political interference. "The proposed Regulatory Commission should comprise transport authorities, bus owners and commuters," he said adding that the Government was also of the opinion that the transport service should be centralised. |
