by Florence Wickramage As part of an advocacy programme on eco-tourism of the Pacific Asia Travel Associaton (PATA) Sri Lanka Chapter, a `Bottle-Binning" project to recycle used glass bottles was launched in Colombo recently. The project is a mission to save the environment from further pollution. The launch of the 'Bottle Binning' initiative is expected to expand within and around Colombo with the support of the travel trade, the Ceylon Glass Company, leading supermarkets, hotels and restaurants. The project will centralise the collection of bottles and cans, which cannot be re-utilised or which are in excess such as most imported bottles, beer cans, empty spray cans etc. The project will later envelop other materials such as plastic bottles, plastic bags and tin-food cans. The organisers request the public to join in the project during this `bottle-month'. The discarded glass can be rinsed out, and separated by colour (white brown or amber). Bins will be labelled for easy disposal, organisers said. |
