by Meegoda group correspondent We have proposed to develop 20 highways at a cost of Rs. 20 million under the provisions of an agreement signed with the Asian Development Bank. Godagama-Ingiriya highway is one such highway, said Defence Transport Highways and Civil Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana. The Minister was addressing a meeting after laying the foundation stone for a Gamani Jayasuriya Memorial building, a police post and a post office building supplementary to the Meegoda Rural Economic Centre, built under the auspices of the Minister, Rural Economy and the Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena. The "government may construct highways, but the duty of maintaining them partly lies with the public. A sense of responsibility and duty consciousness on the part of the public is very important in this connection," the Minister said. Mass Communication Minister Imthiyaz Bakeer Markar said he would make the proposed post office a fully equipped one with all modern facilities. Minister Bandula Gunawardena thanked the various institutions such as the State Steel Corporation and Mascons Ltd. for contributing materials needed for the construction of the building. He also paid a glowing tribute to the State Engineering Corporation for its co-operation towards the construction of the project. PC member Lakshman Abegunaratne, Maharagama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Masakorala, Homagama PS Chairman Manjusri Arangala and Co-ordinating Secretary to the Prime Minister R. Magammana and several others also spoke. |
