Pramuka boss blames Central Bank for failure

The former head of the liquidated Pramuka bank, Rohan Perera in a statement sent to the Daily News has alleged that omissions by the Central Bank led to the collapse of his bank.

In his statement Perera charges that "VVIPs," whom he does not name had sought "gratification" from him to keep his bank afloat.

In a separate letter Perera also denied a report that appeared in the Daily News that he had mortgaged his residences before he left the country. He also denied that he had sold two luxury vehicles he had owned.

He said the Mercedes Benz given to him by the bank had been returned once the bank was liquidated.

"There is no basis for these allegations and there are no outstanding loans against immovable property owned by me or any members of my immediate family," he wrote.

Perera's lawyers told court that he had left the country before notice was issued on him.

He also said in the letter that the news report stated that Interpol had been contacted to trace him. "There is no necessity to conduct a search for me. If the authorities wish to ask me any questions through Interpol they could obtain my current address and telephone number by inquiring from my lawyers."

He charged that the article "by reporting these false allegations gives the impression that I have raised funds and/or disposed of my assets in Sri Lanka prior to leaving Sri Lanka and that I am absconding."

Perera says he will answer all charges when he returns to the country "once my leave period expires." He is due to appear in court on January 24.
