BIDTI General Course

The Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) will hold its next General Course which is the 16th in the series commencing on Monday, January 20. It will have the normal duration of 4 months comprising lectures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

The General Course is now well known and recognised in the land for its comprehensive range covering the salient aspects of the global scene. Its curriculum identifies contemporary events and developments in all spheres of activity in international affairs with lectures on each such subject by specialists. Typical of these subjects are political which covers multilateral diplomacy, international organisations, structural changes in international society and international relations. Under economic affairs there are lectures on multilateral trade, development policies, finance.

In the category of current global issues subjects such as security, disarmament, social problems like population, environment, rights of the child, socio economic responsibilities of the state are lecture subjects. The lectures on international law covers subjects such as provisions of the UN Charter, International Court of Justice, the Law of Treaties and Treaty Making, International Trade Law. Of particular interest is the subject of international conferences which include organising of conferences, conference forms and procedures, participation in conferences, negotiating arts and skills.

The Course provides special lectures on Sri Lanka as a case study in various fields. These are economic policies, history and communications, cultural heritage, political and constitutional development, rural development. It will be seen therefore that the curriculum is all embracing and encompasses the main features of international relations, international institutions and international problems facing the world along with the specialised study of various aspects of Sri Lanka.

It is this wide ranging character of the Course which is perhaps its major appeal. It has been described as the maximum knowledge of the international scene within the shortest possible time. Another feature of the General Course is the high calibre of its lectures who are all guest lecturers as the Institute does not have a separate faculty. These guest lecturers represent the most eminent authorities in their subjects available in Sri Lanka. In addition foreign scholars are invited from time to time.
