by Wennappuwa Central group correspondent Irrespective of community or religious differences the burning aspiration of the Sri Lankan nation is the establishment of lasting peace and harmony in the country. It is happy to note that the Government has laid the foundation to evolve a democratic solution to the North-East problem within the framework of a Federal Governance, said Speaker Joseph Michael Perera, addressing the 20th anniversary and the award presentation of the JPs' Association of Sri Lanka held recently at the Negombo Town Hall grounds. Out of 1,590 members of the Association 240 members received merit awards. Fifty members received national awards and 21 received "Kirthi Sri" Titles. Speaker Joseph Michael Perera said that the twenty-year ethnic war cast on our people destruction, despair, desolation,loss of lives and unrest. The cult of brutality is fading away and humanity, human values, goodwill, friendship and brotherhood are rejuvenating in Sri Lanka. We all have to extend patriotic support and co-operation in restoring peace and speedy development in our motherland. He also exhorted the public to co-operate in eliminating basic factors which contributes to the escalation of crime in the country. Negombo Mayor A.A. Newton Henry Fernando, K.D. Rufas, President, Sri Lanka JPs' Association and Vice President, John Philip also spoke. Jayantha Kalubowila former President of the Association said JPs who render a responsible service to the nation expand their social service to the society. They should go all out to fulfil traditions and conventions affiliated to their office. S.M. Narsim Marikkar, Publicity Officer of the Association proposed the vote of thanks. |
