The distribution of school uniform materials have been postponed to mid February to ensure all children including new Grade one entrants receive their quota simultaneously. The Schools Development Ministry Secretary H.M. Sirisena said they have taken this decision to reduce costs involving a second distribution. Applications from new grade one entrants will be called for free uniform materials next week. The completed applications will be collected through the district secretaries. He said due to the new arrangements to provide material for only those who apply they have been able to reduce expenditures up to about 17 per cent. The number of packets distributed last year were 6,787,045. It will be 5,544,558 this year. Over 3.68 million students have applied for school uniform material for 2003 while the government provided this relief to a total of 4,026,233 students last year. (MF) |
